Research Facilities
Boston College supports a wide array of cutting edge shared research resources including eight core facilities and three recharge centers. Oversight for these facilities is placed under the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (VPR) and is the primary responsibility of the Executive Director, Research InfrastructureÌý& Operations.ÌýThe BC core facilities employ iLab for scheduling and sharing important information. Core Facility News
The BC institutional policy that undergrads are not permitted to work alone unsupervised in a laboratory without prior explicit approval from EH&S includes the BC Core Facilities and Scientific Recharge Facilities. Ìý
Animal Care Facility
Provides comprehensive animal care and research support, including veterinary oversight, husbandry, health monitoring, training, and specialized equipment for biomedical research.
Flow Cytometry
Provides flow cytometry and cell sorting capabilities for identifying and characterizing cells or particles in suspension using fluorescent probes, including analysis based on size, granularity and fluorescence.
Magnetic Resonance Center
Maintains 600, 500, and 400 MHz NMR spectrometers, as well as EMX-Plus and ESR-5000 EPR systems, including federally funded 500 MHz Bruker instruments with autosamplers and cryoprobes.
Scientific Instrumentation & Machining Services
Operates a Machine Shop and electronics lab that provide scientific instrumentation repair, fabrication, and troubleshooting services for science department research and undergraduate teaching labs
Center for Isotope Geochemistry
Provides high-precision isotopic analysis of geological, marine, environmental, and archaeological materials using instruments such as TIMS, IRMS, and ICP-MS, supported by a metal-free clean laboratory.
Human Neuroscience Laboratory
Supports research on human cognition and brain function using cognitive neuroscience techniques, including TMS, EEG, fNIRS, Psychophysiology, Eye-tracking, & Behavioral measures.
Materials Characterization
Supports materials characterization, including surface, optical, thermal, structural, and mechanical analysis using instruments such as XPS, PXRD, and AFM.
Shared Instrumentation Core
Centralizes and standardizes support for departmental research resources and shared instrumentation across facilities and laboratories.
Cleanroom & Nanofabrication Facility
Supports nanofabrication and advanced device fabrication in Class 1,000 and 10,000 cleanroom facilities designed to minimize environmental contamination during sensitive fabrication processes.
Imaging Facility
Supports microscopy imaging and image analysis. Includes dedicated microscope suites, image analysis workstations, and bench space and a fume hood for sample preparation and experimental setup.
The Mass Spectrometry Center
Provides mass spectrometry and chromatographic analysis systems using advanced instrumentation. Ionization techniques include ESI, DART, and MALDI.
X-ray Crystallography Center
Supports investigation of protein and small molecule structures using X-ray diffractometers, crystal growth facilities, and workstations for crystallographic data analysis.

Joshua Rappoport, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Research Infrastructure & Operations
Dr. Joshua Z. Rappoport received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Brown University and then went on to earn a Ph.D. from the Program in Mechanisms of Disease and Therapeutics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Graduate School of Biological Sciences of New York University. Dr. Rappoport then went on to perform postdoctoral work at The Rockefeller University in New York City in the Laboratory of Cellular Biophysics. Subsequently he was recruited as a faculty member in the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham in England.
In 2014 Dr. Rappoport returned to the United States to serve as the Director of the Center for Advanced Microscopy and Nikon Imaging Center at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and as a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. As of March 1st, 2019, Dr. Rappoport is the Executive Director, Research Infrastructure & Operations.
This position in the office of the Vice-Provost for Research focuses upon expanding and improving the shared research resources available to BC faculty, such as core facilities and recharge centers.
